Nico Mannion

Position: PG                  From: Arizona                      Class/YOB: Freshman

Height: 6’3                        Weight: 190                        Wingspan:

Strengths:

  • Heady playmaker. Attacks with good pace, drawing help defenders and finding open teammates. He led a young Arizona offense by creating opportunities for their other weapons
  • Quick first step and elevates well on the run. He is a threat to blow by a defender and dunk on the help if they are late. Brings the size and athleticism necessary to play and guard NBA point guards. Moves well laterally to stay in front of guards
  • Acrobatic finisher with floaters and alternative finishes to avoid shot blockers. Even on nights when his shot was off, Mannion found ways to get to the line and finish in traffic
  • Solid shooter despite what his percentages. When his feet are set, he is a knockdown shooter. A lot of his jumpers came off the bounce this year. His balance and release are consistent and should translate well to the NBA
  • Stays tight coming off ball screens, forcing switches or creating open looks with his vision or shot-making ability. Mannion missed some shots in the P&R this year, but he created the looks and played the angles that will be there in the NBA. The footwork and instincts are there
  • Tough competitor. Steps up for big moments. Does whatever is needed to win

Weaknesses:

  • In isolation situations, he struggled to create space for open shots. May need to be more decisive with his moves
  • Reads the initial screen defender well in the pick-and-roll. He’ll need to work on reading that help-side defender to avoid putting bigs in a tough spot on the catch or settling for a tough layup himself
  • Settles for tough jumpers too often. He is really effective when he gets his feet set, but he isn’t a great shooter when he has to elevate over a tight contest
  • Defensively, he is solid. As athletic as he is, there are NBA guards that will have the strength and quickness to attack him. He will need to add some more upper body strength and develop his base to consistently be an impact defender
