Position: PG From: Australia (USA) Class/YOB: 2001
Height: 6’7 Weight: 180 Wingspan:
Strengths:
- Great size and length for a point guard. Sees over most guards and is able to maximize his vision
- Playmaking ability is already at an NBA level. LaMelo is a creative passer that has the feel and vision to control games when his shot is not falling
- Probes in the pick-and-roll, constantly waiting for the defense to make a mistake. He can find the roll man, throw pinpoint cross-court passes to shooters, or he can hit threes with time. Also has a reliable floater out to 12-feet
- Uses his length to guard multiple positions. LaMelo has good anticipation shooting the passing lanes and getting deflections
- Plus rebounder at the guard spot. He’s taller than the average wing, so he doesn’t hesitate grab-and-go in transition
- No stranger to the spotlight. He has matured exponentially as a leader and player over the last couple of years. Still a teenager, Ball is going to come into the NBA ready to play
Weaknesses:
- His slight build will be a problem when dealing with physical defenders or while trying to fight over screens
- Just an average athlete. Not very explosive or quick
- Takes a lot of off-balance jump shots. There is no questioning his shooting range. Maintaining consistent balance on his threes could make a huge difference in his efficiency from range
- He doesn’t possess much of a mid-range game. He either shoots threes or gets into his runner/floater game. Rarely takes pull-ups. Should look to add that to his game
- Still can try to be too flashy with his passes when a simple pass would get the job done
