Isaiah Stewart

Position: C                 From: Washington                        Class/YOB: Freshman

Height: 6’9                         Weight: 250                        Wingspan:

Strengths:

  • Grown man strength. He moves players on the interior with his powerful body
  • Nimble feet in the post. Stewart doesn’t just bulldoze defenders, though he can take one dribble from the block and throw down dunks on multiple players. After getting his broad shoulder into a defender’s chest, he can spin either way for a hook or step through as a counter. Does a great job of doing his work early to get position
  • Promising perimeter game. He only made five threes, but you can see the potential in his mid-range jumpers and foul shooting. Stewart’s face-up jump shot is money. With time, he will become a consistent pick-and-pop scorer. For a big, he is already able to take a couple of dribbles to beat a defender
  • Rebounds out of his area with an attitude. Stewart is especially dominant as an offensive rebounder where he carves out space every possession, regardless if he ends up with the ball or not
  • Plus shot-blocker. He may only be 6’9, but he can play bigger thanks to incredibly long arms. He manned the middle of Washington’s 2-3 zone for much of the year
  • Plays with tenacity and joy that is going to be appreciated by teammates and coaches alike

Weaknesses:

  • Counters in the post are not refined yet. His hooks each way are reliable. I can see him trying to make the right moves, but the fluidity is not all the way there for counter moves
  • Didn’t see him defend a ton of pick-and-roll situations with that 2-3 zone at Washington. Guarding out in space could be an adjustment as he is not that quick laterally. He should be fine given his effort and athleticism, but it was essentially a year without in-game reps in one of the toughest scenarios for young bigs in the NBA
  • Has to improve as a passer out of double teams. Typically he buried defenders so deep that double teams would be late. When they did come, he wasn’t always comfortable kicking it out accurately to shooters or finding cutters
  • For now, his shooting range is 17 feet and in. He will take some threes from time to time. The sooner he develops the confidence from three, the sooner he will play bigger minutes
