De’Andre Hunter

Position: SF/PF From: Virginia Class/YOB: Sophomore
Height: 6’8 Weight: 225 Wingspan: 7’2

Strengths

  • Impressive physical gifts. At about 6’8 with a 7’2 wingspan and good laterally quickness, he has plus measurables that he uses well
  • Shutdown defender that should be able to disrupt 2 through 4. Always has his hands active and ready for tips. Communicates about as well as any prospect in the class. Makes an effort to anticipate both on the ball and as a help defender. His defensive discipline is really what makes him special
  • Really solid mid-range scorer. Has worked on his pull-up to the point where it’s almost automatic. Can come off screens or find his shot off the dribble. Has a tighter handle than last year
  • Finishes from close-range and at the basket. Scores off these fall-away runners in the lane, using his long arms to his advantage
  • Hits spot-up threes and is starting to get them off quicker. Not an elite outside shooter from NBA distance, but it looks like his shot should expand. Shooting almost 46 percent from three on a couple attempts a game
  • High-IQ player that makes the most of his chances. He’s skilled enough to go create when plays break down, but will let plays in an offense develop
  • Already shows polished footwork in the post. Very tough to guard from the mid-post because of he can elevate right over defenders or get all the way to the rack with one dribble
  • Excellent intangibles. Looks like a great teammate and is one of the more reliable players in college basketball. Worst case scenario, he’s a rotation piece

Weakness:

  • He is not a consistent NBA-range three shooter yet. With reps, his form looks like it can stretch out. Not there yet
  • I think he’s underrated as a playmaker, but he is not a guy NBA teams will use in a ball-handling role. Not too slippery off the dribble and a bit limited in terms of his vision
  • Quickness can neutralize his perimeter game to an extent. Smaller guys can pick at his dribble and take away some rhythm on his pull-up
  • Will he ever become a star? The more I watch him, the more I think he’s got something special. But there are questions about how much better he will get
