NBA Draft Spotlight: Joe Wieskamp

Iowa freshman Joe Wieskamp put together a very impressive opening season for the Hawkeyes. His decision to declare for the draft is more exploratory than anything, but he is a player with long-term potential as an NBA Draft prospect.

Position: SG From: Iowa Class/YOB: Freshman
Height: 6’7 Weight: 205 Wingspan: N/A

Strengths:

  • Accurate long-range shooter that can light it up from three. Moves well off the ball and understands floor spacing. High release makes it almost impossible for other wings to block his shot
  • Long arms aid him defensively. He’s a natural two guard that has great size that he uses well. Covers a lot of ground and is a disciplined defender
  • Good athlete who gets off the floor effectively. Sticks his nose in there for rebounds where he has good hands to pull in boards in traffic
  • Highly efficient scorer from three levels. Didn’t get a ton of touches, but he has natural scoring instincts. As his ball-handling skills develop, he could be a dangerous scoring weapon

Weaknesses:

  • Not as aggressive as he should be given his talent. As a freshman that is understandable. In year two, if he returns, I’d like to see him applying pressure on defenses all game
  • Ball-handling creativity and wiggle. He stays low when he drives, which is a good starting point, but he doesn’t do a lot in isolation situations due to a lack of shake
  • Still has a very young body. Doesn’t have the strength that he will have in a year or two to match his tough play style
  • Lacks blowby speed and quickness. Can be too straight up when guarding the ball
