NBA Draft Spotlight: Charles Matthews

The former Kentucky recruit found success as a transfer at Michigan. In two years, Charles Matthews was a driving force behind one of the nation’s top defenses while providing big shots in big moments.

Position: SG From: Michigan Class/YOB: Junior
Height: 6’6 Weight: 210 Wingspan: N/A

  • Strong all-around defender. Moves with a purpose and has active hands on and off the ball. Possesses the size and length to be an impact wing defender in the NBA
  • Post-up game is solid for an off-guard. Uses his size to shoot up over defenders
  • Can heat up from the mid-range. Brings a high release that is tough to contest in traffic
  • Has a toughness and grit about his game

  • Has been unable to expand his range to the three-point line. Looks to be a guy that will be a mid-range option without much range past 20 feet
  • He shoots more mid-range shots than I think he should. His touch in the paint and athletic ability are good. He could do more slashing than he currently does now
  • Doesn’t create a ton of offense for his teammates. Not a bad passer, but he isn’t a top-level playmaker either
  • Have to wonder what his offensive role will be if his three-point shot doesn’t progress. He will need to be a good cutter and pick his spots because the volume won’t be nearly as high in an NBA system early on
