NBA Draft Spotlight: Dedric Lawson

Even with a year left of eligibility, Dedric Lawson is leaving Kansas after testing the waters a few years ago. Some of the issues that existed then still persist, but overall, Lawson is much more fit to be a pro.

Position: PF From: Kansas Class/YOB: Junior
Height: 6’9 Weight: 230 Wingspan: 7’2

Strengths:

  • Oddly impressive vision for a player of his size. Capable of bringing the ball up, initiating the offense, and finding the open man
  • Great length (7-foot-2 wingspan) and energy allow him to be a force on the glass
  • With time and space, he can hit mid-range shots and occasional threes. Shot was much improved from the three-point line and the foul stripe
  • Bangs on the inside to finish in the paint. Uses length to float shots over taller defenders

Weaknesses:

  • Below-average lift around the rim
  • Not a reliable NBA-range three shooter by any stretch. Has to prove that he is able to make those consistently
  • Lacks foot speed to guard on switches. Will need to guard fours in the NBA, but he will be attacked in pick-and-rolls
  • His scoring package as a whole is not very deep. Will get most of his offense from second chances and rim runs. Will need to do a better job of rolling hard to the rim as opposed to rolling soft and expecting passes early
