NBA Draft Spotlight: Chuma Okeke

Before tearing his ACL in the Elite Eight, Chuma Okeke saw his draft stock rise with a big NCAA Tournament. He has declared for the draft, so we will see the type of feedback he receives before a final decision is made.

Position: PF From: Auburn Class/YOB: Sophomore
Height: 6’8 Weight: 230 Wingspan: 7’0

Strengths:

  • Versatile defender with long arms and effortless agility to chase down shots on the help side. Guards on the perimeter almost as well as he does in the paint
  • Pick-and-pop option due to his comfort shooting from beyond the arc. Shoots with a very smooth release from the mid-range area as well
  • High upside as a two-way player. He was the third option for the Tigers, making the most of his touches. If he can come back healthy, look for his game to translate and flourish in the NBA style or for him to take a lead role at Auburn
  • Timing and anticipation as an offensive rebounder is a real gift

Weaknesses:

  • ACL injury is a concern, especially for a player with the up-tempo style that he possesses
  • Still plays a little bit too much on the perimeter. Settles for a lot of jumpers and doesn’t bang in the post much
  • Doesn’t always look to assert himself. As an underclassman playing with two talented, experienced guards, that could just be a function of the team makeup. Will need to make sure he doesn’t float in and out of games
  • I would like to see him do more around the rim as a shot-blocker, similar to what he did in the NCAA Tournament. With such good timing and athletic ability, he should be a guy who can play at the five spot in smaller lineups and still protect the basket
