NBA Draft Spotlight: Laurynas Birutis

After pulling his name out of the draft late last year, Lithuanian center Laurynas Birutis will probably go through a similar process. He is stronger and more skilled than a year ago so I would expect him to receive better feedback.

Position: C From: Lithuania Class/YOB: 1997
Height: 7’1 Weight: 242 Wingspan: N/A

Strengths:

  • Light on his feet for such a big player. Explodes around the rim for finishes and offensive rebounds
  • Rim runner who rolls hard to the rim where he can finish lobs and make tough catches
  • Nice touch from 15-feet and in. Would expect he can utilize that in pick-and-rolls
  • Reliable rim protector. Sends shots away on the help side regularly

Weaknesses:

  • Lack of shooting range limits his upside
  • Playing on a top European team, he isn’t getting the playing time to see him a lot. He is averaging 18.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per 40 minutes
  • Has added good strength over last year. A little bit raw physically and with his post game
  • Really is just an outlet option on offense. Other parts of his game are rough around the edges
