NBA Draft Spotlight: John Konchar

John Konchar is one of the mid-major players that I think should impress a lot of teams in workouts and interviews. The versatile wing can do just about everything and should be rewarded for his maturity.

Position: SG From: IPFW Class/YOB: Senior
Height: 6’5 Weight: 207 Wingspan: N/A

Strengths:

  • A physically strong defender that plays with high intensity and active hands. Instincts offset a general lack of superior athleticism
  • Stretches the floor with his outside stroke. Efficiency is off the charts from three levels. Efforts to expand his range have shown, as he has been able to get his shot off quicker
  • Sound passer that grew into the play initiator for Fort Wayne. Sees the court well and has a natural feel for when to deliver passes. At his size, he is able to make a lot of passes over the top as well
  • Gritty competitor that has a nose for the ball. One of the best rebounding guards in the country each of his four seasons. He should develop into a good post up player. If given a chance, he will win teams over with his willingness to do whatever it takes to get wins

Weaknesses:

  • Not a quick or long athlete. Progressed from more of a 3/4 to a 2/3. Will be at a disadvantage athletically against NBA guards
  • Very efficient, but he has been susceptible to struggling against length at the rim. Doesn’t get off the floor particularly quick and his runner still needs work to be an interior threat
  • Likes to use screens to get open off the dribble. Will have to make sure he doesn’t let quicker players take him out of his rhythm
