NBA Draft Spotlight: Shamorie Ponds

Shamorie Ponds quickly established himself as one of the top players in the Big East early in his career. After three years giving opposing college coaches nightmares, he will look to become the first St. John’s draft pick in Mo Harkless.

Position: PG From: St. John’s Class/YOB: Junior
Height: 6’1 Weight: 175 Wingspan: 6’2

Strengths:

  • Shifty ball-handler that can get to his spots creatively
  • Decent vision and gravity that allows him to find open shooters and cutters
  • Tough shot maker. Finishes acrobatic plays around the basket, understands how to score from close-range, and has a knack for hitting contested shots when the clock is running down
  • Very good hands when guarding the ball. Ball-handlers have to be on high alert as he can rip the ball at any moment. Defense could actually be what gets him on the court early on
  • Fearless competitor

Weaknesses:

  • Erratic shot taker. Outside shooting is streaky. Will need to reign in some of his selection in the NBA
  • Wiry frame that isn’t overly projectable
  • Took nice steps to improve as a playmaker. Still will need to adjust to being more of an orchestra, without sacrificing his dynamic scoring ability
  • Limited wingspan is going to make it more difficult to score on the inside. Defensive quickness will help him, but he doesn’t have much room for error physically
