NBA Draft Spotlight: Mfiondu Kabengele

Florida State sophomore Mfiondu Kabengele was the best sixth man in college basketball and one of the breakout players in the country. Now it is looking more than likely that he cashes in on his rising stock and enter the 2019 NBA Draft.

Position: PF From: Florida State Class/YOB: Sophomore
Height: 6’10 Weight: 250 Wingspan: 7’1

Strengths:

  • High-energy post who rebounds at a high rate and runs the court hard
  • Strong build, decent length, and good athleticism that will serve him well on the interior
  • Active shot blocker. Gets off the ground in a hurry. Closing speed is going to help him grow as a defender in the pick-and-roll game
  • Tenacious finisher. Throws down like he has a problem with the rim. Does a nice job forcing defenders to foul him. Averaged 9.0 free throw attempts per 40 minutes and shot 76 percent from the line
  • Promising shooter that is continuing to expand his range. When he gets his feet under him, he is already a fairly reliable threat from three-point range. Dangerous pick-and-roll upside with his athleticism as a roller and touch when he pops

Weaknesses:

  • Struggles with foul problems. Can be too anxious to block shots and has a tendency to use his hands when defending on the perimeter
  • Growing back-to-basket game, but he doesn’t have a wide range of moves down low at this point
  • Making plays out of double teams is an area he still needs to work on, though he probably won’t face a lot in typical NBA matchups
  • Overall game is still raw. There are a lot of tools there, but he has a lot of rough edges. Definitely has the potential to be a diamond in the rough though
