NBA Draft Spotlight: Matisse Thybulle

Position: SF From: Washington Class/YOB: Senior
Height: 6’5 Weight: 190 Wingspan: 7’0

  • Defensive mastermind. The most disruptive wing defender in college basketball, and it’s not even that close. Washington plays a lot of zone, but you can tell his instincts and activity will translate in a man-to-man setting. Despite average height, he possesses excellent length that allows him to block shots and frustrate multiple positions. Reminds me a lot of Andre Roberson
  • Plays with high energy at all times. Even when he’s not scoring, his presence is felt. Has no issue mixing it up on the inside
  • Good intangibles. Leads by example on both ends. Doesn’t try to do too much and plays within himself. May be the Pac-12 Player of the Year without even averaging double digits. Should have no problem fitting into an NBA locker room and finding a role
  • Serious 3-and-D potential. His shot is a lot better than the numbers show. Starting this season ice cold, but he is starting to look more like himself in Pac-12 play. Not a shooter off the dribble, but he has a decent stroke spotting up

  • Not a scorer. Has trouble creating his own offense and has been inconsistent from three. Almost all of his offense will come from hustle plays and transition run outs
  • Can bite on too many fakes defensively. For being a guard, he really tries to block everything, leading to careless fouls. Has to trust his length with the intention to contest and not always swat shots
  • Have to wonder how he can fit into an offense if his jump shot isn’t falling. He is a ball mover, but his playmaking isn’t to a point where he would be a primary or even secondary ball-handler in the NBA
  • Has to be a little more aggressive inside the arc. Tends to stand a lot on the perimeter waiting for kick outs for threes, where he isn’t particularly lethal to begin with at this point. With his athleticism, I’d like to see him cut more than he does
